The lockdowns implemented in early February would have been so successful the GOP would be instituting impeachment hearings because the president overstepped his authority.

People keep saying things presuming there’s ignorance or misunderstanding—you don’t understand exponential growth—but that’s not what’s happening.

We’re watching people test-market reasons to not care about coronavirus deaths, to simply treat them as “normal” or “within expected tolerances.”

And when those deaths are intolerable, en masse or when key individuals are stricken, they will similarly market reasons that someone they already despise is to blame.

There’s no good faith; no attempt to engage with the reality of the situation. “What is” is a glancing concern relative to the long term project of declaring themselves Always Moral and Always Correct.

That last question can only be answered by a Republican if the 7500 murdered people are further characterized. E.g., 7500 murdered wealthy white suburbanites would be a real problem, 7500 poor non-white people getting murdered would be much less of a problem, etc.

That’s pretty much the whole US political problem, right there.

Norway still has a relatively low CFR, and this story may explain why:

Very low mortality rate from coronavirus in Norway compared to other countries

On Wednesday this week, more than 73,000 people had been tested for SARS CoV-2 in Norway. At the same time, just over 3100 cases had been detected.

So about 1 out of every 74 people in Noway have already been tested.

Which allows them to identify the infected and quarantine them.

The Toronto Star editorial board pulls no punches:

Troops at border would make a crisis situation even worse

You can count on Donald Trump for one thing at least: if there’s a bad situation, he’ll find a way to make it worse.

As the COVID-19 pandemic enters an even more critical phase, the Trump administration is apparently pushing a plan that would waste resources and ramp up the tension at an already tense time for no good purpose.

It emerged on Thursday that the U.S. is looking at placing troops near the border to deter people from sneaking over from Canada and spreading the disease.

[…]

Yes, a bad situation all round. And Trump determined to make it even worse.

As I said a few days ago, this is the same playbook from guns and climate change. Deny it exists, silence the warnings, then when the problem becomes undeniable, shift to trying to convince people that the casualties and consequences are acceptable.

This playbook has worked every time in recent history. Americans accept gun deaths. Americans accept climate change catastrophes. It is entirely possible they will also accept pandemic deaths.

No, for sure, there’s a chance that Covid will buck that trend. Guns don’t kill enough people to make a big impression in everyone’s lives. Climate change kills other people in faraway places mostly. But a virus can reach everyone.

re: #48 NO SMOCKING GUN!

A wingnut argued to me that “we don’t shut everything down to stop flu deaths every year.”

Flu kills far more people than it should, because they don’t get vaccinated, but the death rate from the flu is 10-40 times lower than covid19. Covid19 is far easier to transmit, and the asymptomatic manner of exposure means it is able to spread further than the seasonal flu.

Doing nothing was not an option, or else the health care system would collapse - even with efforts to bend the curve, it might not be enough everywhere.

Flu has vaccines (that aren’t mandated but should be for those who can get them)
People accept a death rate? Why? Why can’t we lower the death rate? If we know 30-40 million get sick from the flu, universal vaccination requirements could reduce the number sickened, reduce lost time, etc., and all of that benefits the economy.

Covid19 has no vaccine, no proven drug regime for treatment, and no one has any immunity to it.

But sure, do nothing. Let the world burn. See if I care. /

One of the first deaths in Virginia from coronavirus was a 66-year-old Christian “musical evangelist” who fell ill while on a trip to New Orleans with his wife. As the Friendly Atheist’s Hemant Mehta points out, Landon Spradlin had previously shared opinions that the pandemic was the result of “mass hysteria” from the media.

On March 13, Spradlin shared a misleading meme that compared coronavirus deaths to swine flu deaths and suggested the media is using the pandemic to hurt Trump. In the comments, Spradlin acknowledged that the outbreak is a “real issue,” but added that he believes “the media is pumping out fear and doing more harm than good”

“It will come and it will go,” he wrote.

That same say, he shared a post from another pastor that told the story of a missionary in South Africa who “protected” himself from the bubonic plague with the “Spirit of God.”

“As long as I walk in the light of that law [of the Spirit of life], no germ will attach itself to me,” read a quote from the post.

And as you suspected, it would a war, napalming of a law for profit, draining the coffers of a willing nation, or a mosquito bite.
Replace mosquito bite with World Wide Killer Virus and I think that’s a winning scratch off.

In fact, the evidence points the opposite direction: That we are past the point where we CAN flatten the curve, that instead we have to focus on delaying tactics until we can build enough infrastructure to weather the storm. Minnesota is already retooling efforts to build temporary non-emergency facilities and convert hospitals into full-time emergency and ICU facilities.

It is an impossibility to accurately assess a county as high, medium or low risk. What is the per capita testing criteria to ensure reasonably accurate information in terms of number of cases? What is the population density threshold? Can a county abutting a known hot spot ever be considered low risk? How often are you going to re-visit the categorization?

And on top of that, the moment you realize that a county is leaving the “low risk” category, it’s already too late.

Some Christians no doubt are, the ones who, you know, pay attention to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 25:

40 And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’
41 Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
43 A stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’
44 Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’
45 He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’

Big news from PowerBall lottery hq:

Attention Players - POWERBALL to make changes to starting jackpot amount and minimum jackpot roll increases

Following next Grand Prize win, Powerball jackpot will reset to $20 million with minimum roll increases of $2 million between drawings.

The Powerball Product Group today announced changes to ensure the game continues to support good causes in all 48 U.S. lottery jurisdictions. Following the next Grand Prize win, Powerball’s starting jackpot will reset to a guaranteed $20 million (annuity) with minimum roll increases of $2 million between drawings.

“Powerball players in many U.S. lottery jurisdictions are under shelter-in-place orders or recommendations from their governors or mayors, which have affected normal consumer behaviors,” said Gregory Mineo, Powerball Product Group Chairman and Maine Lottery Director. “Just like other enterprises around the world that are making adjustments, we are making proactive changes to continue to offer the world’s premier lottery product.”

Tonight’s advertised jackpot is a guaranteed $150 million; $114.8 million cash value. If the jackpot is won in tonight’s drawing, the jackpot will reset to a guaranteed $20 million (annuity) for the Saturday, March 28 drawing with minimum jackpot roll increases of $2 million between drawings. If the jackpot is not won tonight, then the jackpot will grow to an estimated $160 million (annuity).

This is a big change. I was expecting something, but not necessarily because of Covid-19 (though with lottery offices closed in many state from shutdowns the state lotteries are probably worried about how to sell games with stores closed.)

Put simply, sales were already way down before Covid-19 caused shutdowns.

And, something the notice doesn’t mention but is the real cause I believe, the extremely low interest rates are making the annuity and the cash value much closer. In other words, the lotteries now have to pay out a much bigger cash prize for the nominal annuity prize (which is the one advertised.) A couple of weeks ago, when the annuities were at their lowest yield, the cash value was up to a whopping 80% of the annuitized payouts.

So combining low sales and extremely low interest rates, the draw games are not netting much for the states.

Now dropping the starting value in half, and reducing the incremental annuitized prize by four fifths, Powerball is simply admitting defeat without closing doors. Sales will decrease.

MegaMillions hasn’t made an announcement yet, I think.

Two layers down in the tweet pile you posted: a claim that the Service Employee’s International Union has found 39 million n95s and plugged their health workers into the source.

Did the Trump Admin just…..not call a supplier with 39 million masks on hand? Or a second supplier that could produce 20 million in a week?

I mean. Data coming out of other countries that are doing a lot of testing (along with some of the cruise ship data) does suggest, at this moment, that there are a reasonable number of asymptomatic cases. Potentially somewhere on the order of ~15% or so. There are also rumblings that the infection-fatality ratio (which is nearly impossible to calculate at the beginning of a pandemic) may end up being lower than first thought. Which is not bad news, but…

NONE of these things changes the impact of all of these cases hitting at once and overwhelming our health care system, nor do they minimize the impact on those who do develop symptoms. A good leader would understand these things and continue to emphasize the need for social distancing, slowing the rate of infection, and doing everything possible to enable our healthcare systems to survive the surge.

Instead …well. Yes.

I remember a report mentioned 3 or so days ago in a YT video (I think it was Maddow—will check) about some village in Italy, within which a WHO study was done on ALL the inhabitants. ALL were tested for CoVid-19 *and* interviewed/questioned about their health, including Q’s about any symptoms they had noticed. When the test results came back, the interview data was indicating “no symptoms” for about HALF of those whose tests had turned out positive.

Yeah, the bigger question with all of these has been “who has tested positive and is currently asymptomatic but goes on to develop symptoms later” versus “who is truly asymptomatic for the entire time they have the virus” and that’s where the cruise ship data is useful.

The reason a lot of states are now ordering shelter in place, even Republican dominated states, is that anyone who reads the epidemiologists knows that cases will continue to explode anywhere humans are allowed to gather closely.

Trump has been off the rails for some time, but now his recklessness is going to be doubly harmful. So many Americans are in denial - they don’t want to believe that their guy is the bad actor.

Low oil prices means that shale oil costs more to pump out of the ground and process than other sources. The breakeven for shale oil is several times the cost Saudis can pump oil. So Saudis drive shale oil out of business and screw the Russians in one shot.

Alt energy continues to be the only true path away from Saudi oil dependence.

And DT refuses to look into wind power because it kills birds. I think my neighbor’s cats do more damage to birds than wind turbines.

Found it, but I was wrong about the locale, and maybe it wasn’t W.H.O. The “saturation” testing was at a location in Iceland, not Italy. About 5min 2min into this video:

It’s fair because there is also a village in Italy (Vò) that was tested, which also had quite a number of asymptomatic folks. I haven’t been able to find a solid academic paper on the topic yet though, only news reports.

Not to be a buzzkill but antibody testing isn’t going to be the silver bullet because there’s no reason to believe acquired immunity is permanent or that the virus can’t lay dormant and come back again much stronger chickenpox like does with shingles.

I find it very doubtful that he gives a rat’s patootie about birds. Aesthetics is much more likely but he’s canny enough to make an eco pretense.

Trump Tower windows kill more birds than wind turbines.

There’s a lot we don’t know about this virus in particular and a lot we don’t necessarily know about coronaviruses as a whole but the evidence we do have suggests that acquired immunity is likely to exist and persist for at least some time, although probably not permanently.

For the second, well, honestly we can’t know. We can just deal with the information we have on hand and the things we’ve seen in other coronaviruses, which is that so far that hasn’t been the case.

I went to go look up why your’s and my picture show the top two at different values. It looks like yours is more correct, but I also found this:

Buildings four to 11 stories tall account for about 56 percent of deaths in the new estimate, Loss and his colleagues report in the Condor: Ornithological Applications. Residences that are one to three stories tall make up around 44 percent, with skyscrapers representing less than 1 percent.

I was also wrong about “a locale in Iceland”. Apparently it was ALL of Iceland that was tested. And Rachel’s video was only a few hours old, not 3 days. Sheesh. I’m stressed. I’m retired but both of my daughters are among the newly jobless.

Justin Bieber. Celine Dion.

I may never forgive you for those.

But Ryan Gosling and Rachael McAdams has to count for something. Then there’s Donald and Keifer Sutherland. Margot Kidder, Eugene Levy, Katherine O’Hara, Martin Short… Those have to make up for beiber.

Iceland did a random sampling from across the country but I think it only works out to ~1% of the population. Still, it’s definitely useful data, especially combined with the other information we have.

Sending virtual hugs and best wishes to you and yours. This is a super stressful thing and it changes so fast - it’s hard to stay on top of everything and to know what is good and accurate information versus a poorly designed study or outright fraud, especially since a lot of people are making preprints widely available (which means they haven’t been peer-reviewed yet, necessarily).
